Chapter Twenty-Two

An argument with God

Lexi

Brodie whined, trotting at Lexi’s heels as she marched through soaking undergrowth. Lexi reached a hand down and stroked the silky top of her companion’s wet head. The day had started with so much sunshine and promise. If she’d known that her romantic day with Ian would turn into a tangled mess, she’d have gone grocery shopping instead.

The rain soaked her hair and dripped down her face, but her cheeks still burned as hot as when she’d knocked at the Rose Cottage ten minutes ago and been turned away like a salesman at the door. She’d had the mistaken notion that a private discussion with Stephanie might help diffuse some of the emotions floating in the air. Ha.

With an imperious voice, Stephanie had called from the other side of the door, “Go away! Bill me for whatever it costs to stay in this little shack until tomorrow. And send Ian over here.”

Lexi stood, huddled under her rain jacket with her jaw slack. She certainly would not send Ian over. The nerve!

She stomped down the stairs and headed for her walking path. So much for heaping coals on Stephanie’s head by being kind in the face of her rude attitude. Lexi pushed aside branches, entered a thick stand of Douglas Fir and walked along the pasture fence that ended at a salmon stream. A huge boulder sat to one side of the water, half in and half out. It made a very nice place to sit and have a think. Or have an argument with God.

Wild blackberry bramble tangled in the fence and obscured the path in places. She made a mental note to bring Grandmother’s two milk goats here to eat the brambles down on the next sunny day. Brodie would guard them from the cougar that showed up once in a while.

The blackberry plants gave precious little fruit compared to how much space they took up. She gave a thick clump of the bushes a savage kick and regretted it. She was still wearing the peach dress and her legs paid the price. She muttered when bright red splotches bled through the fabric above her knee. She’d ruined her favorite dress having a tantrum. A fitting end to the day.

Lexi’s cell phone vibrated in the pocket of her jacket. She fished it out and saw a text from Selmar, passing along the message that their Swedish volunteer, Ida, had taken the staff car into town to buy a few more ingredients for her meatball soup. It was her night to cook, and she’d seen there were two more guests.

Do you need anything?

Lexi sent him a brief answer then sat on a nearby log to inspect her bleeding leg. The scratches were beginning to sting. She dabbed the shallow lacerations with a handful of fallen leaves but only smeared the blood. The rain had turned to a soul-pestering drizzle.

Resting her elbows on her knees, she let her hands dangle. A few tears dripped and mixed with rain to form a tiny puddle at her feet.
